How to make wood Sanding Block

Sanding Block -

Hand sanding block is an handmade tools which required no electricity to operate. It is one of the very essential tool in woodworking.

Introduction -

Sanding block is used for sanding and smoothing surfaces, made of wood. It includes a hand grip and a stable surface for attaching sandpaper. It allows a woodworker to get a more controlled and consisted sanding motion. We can sand wood by simply using sandpaper by hands but is not very uncomfortable and dangerous for our hand. We can also use electric sander machine or bench sander machine, but they are very expensive also there are some places on wood that can not be sanded using machines. So we need to make a Handheld sanding block.

Requirements -

Plywood L*W*T (8"*4"*18 mm) =1
Nut, Bolts, Washers L*T (1"*4 mm) = 4+4+4
Drywall Screws L*T (1"*1 mm) = 10
Sanding Paper L*W (10"*4") = 1
3D Printed hand grip (Or made of wood) L*W (6"*3") = 1

Let'us Make -

Here are the steps to make a sanding block by using some basic tools.

First we need to make a base for the sanding block, for that we need to measure and mark and cut the plywood. Measure the plywood L*W*T (8"*4"*18 mm) and cut one piece with the wood cutter machine or hand saw or hack saw. Sand the edges of the plywood with sanding paper.

Then we will need a 3D Printed hand grip sized L*W (6"*3"). But if you don't have a 3D printer you can make it by carving wood. To make it from wood you will need a pine wood block L*W (7"*4"). Carefully mark the shape of the handle on the pine wood block then cut it using band saw or hack saw.

If you have made a grip using wood then attach it with base on the top using fevicol and nails. But if you have made a grip using 3D printer attach it with drywall screws.

Make four holes using drill machine and 5 mm drill bit on all four corner of the plywood. These holes will be used to hold the sandpaper using Nut, Bolts, Washers L*T (1"*4 mm). Insert bolts from beneath the plywood.

Cut the sandpaper L*W (10"*4") using utility knife or scissors. Put the sandpaper on the base plywood. Align sandpaper with the bolts to mark and make all four holes in the sand paper. Then insert the bolts all the way through from the base plywood to the sand paper.

Insert the washers and nuts. Tightens the nuts with wrench or spanner. We can also attach the sandpaper on the base plywood using screws but screws will make it permanent, then we will have no flexibility of changing the sandpaper.

Now your handmade wooden sanding block is ready to use. Test it by sanding and smoothing different types of wood.
