How to make a Twist drill bits Holder

Twist Drill Bits Holder

Introduction

Twist drill bits are the very essentials and common tools in the maker's shop, specially in a wood working shop. And they are used to make round hole in any kind of materials like wood, metal, plastic, wall, ceramics. These bits are twisted in a spiral pattern that's why they are called twisted drill bits or simply twist drill bits. The spiral pattern of the twist drill bits also help in removing material through spiral shaped design from the material it is being drilled. A shop is not considered a shop if it has no drill bits. Drill a hole in any kind of material is the first and necessary thing to do. Without drill making any kind of project in unimaginable. So drill bits are very necessary tools in a shop and to organize them in also necessary so they can't be lost somewhere in the shop.

If we talk about point angle of cutting edges of a drill bits, it depends on the material being drilled and the results we want. For Ex -

point angle of 118 degrees - used in general purpose drilling in soft material

point angle of 135 degrees - used in hard material like metal

There are many types of drill bits available like, Hole saw bits, Twist drill bits, Flat bits, Fostner bits, Twist drill bits for Metal, Twist drill bits for wood, Hammer twist drill bits to drill hole in the wall. We are here talking about twist drill bits of any kind. There are usually 29 twist drill bits in a set from 1 mm to 13 mm usually. Sometime the case in which drill bits comes with gets lost or gets broken, in such case we need to make a holder for drill bits, A Drill Bits Holder.

Making a drill bit holder using a Pine wood block is a very easy to make project. Someone with less experience can make a drill bit holder. First you will need these materials.

Requirement -

Pinewood block L*W*T (7"*3"*1 & 1/2")
Twist drill bits (29 sizes) (1 mm to 13 mm) - https://amzn.to/45hUr4x
Drill Press (Bench Drill) Machine or Drill guide for 13 mm drill Machine - https://amzn.to/3F9ZYzM
Scale (Ruler), Measuring tape - https://amzn.to/3PIyO7X
Marker, Pencil - https://amzn.to/495dWAq
Sandpaper or A sanding block - https://amzn.to/40aiFNf
Varnish, Paint, Sealant, Stain (optional) - https://amzn.to/3Fps2Pw

Let's Make it -

Now we have a block of pinewood, with the dimension L*W*T (7"*3"*1 1/2"). Pinewood block's dimension is 3" so with the help of scale and measuring tape we will mark three line to its length dividing it into three equal parts of 1". See the picture below.

In the first of these 3 equal parts of 1" we will drill hole with drill bits of 1 mm to 8 mm. In the second (middle part) we will hole with drill bits of 8.5 mm to 11.5 mm. And in the third and last part we will drill hole with 12 mm to 13 mm. You can arrange the holes in any pattern you like, but common approach is to make space them evenly in rows.

Please remember that for drilling those holes we will use the same drill bit to hold that very same drill bit in the hole, and should only use Drill Press (Bench Drill) Machine or some kind of drill guide or straight drilling Jig for straight hole at 90 degree. If some or all the holes are not angled at 90 degree and zig-zag then our drill bits will like crooked rams. Also make sure that all the holes are deep enought to hold the drill bits securely, but no longer deep that they go all the way through the pine wood block.

After drill each holes we will need to write the drill bit size in mm on each and every hole we make with each different drill bits. So that only by looking at the Twist drill bit holder we can easily find out our desired size of drill bit. After creating all the holes sand the edges of the holes and the surface of the wood to remove any rough splinters or spots.

If you want, apply a coat of stain or paint to pine wood block to give it a finished look. After that you can apply a coat of varnish or sealant to protect the pine block and give it a glossy or shiny look. Apply the varnish or sealant to dry completely before inserting your twist drill bits into the brand new Twist drill bits holder. I personally don't require to apply any kind of paint or stains on my drill bit holder.

When you will finish making your own twist drill bit holder, it will look like this. Now it is ready to hold all of your drill bits in one single place. And you would have a convenient and organized way to hold and access your drill bits.
